Kelly Street, Half Moon Bay
Dr. Eric Schiller, Ph.D.
will reveal the secrets of English grammar using new explanations from the
University of Chicago. He will reveal simple,
foolproof methods of determining the role a word plays in a sentence. You’ll
learn that difficulties with English grammar are the fault of the language, not
the student. You’ll learn the answers to such baffling questions as:
·
Are color words nouns or adjectives?
·
Are numbers nouns or adjectives?
·
What is the part of speech of ‘such’?
·
Is ending a sentence with a
preposition something up with which you will not put?
This talk is suitable
for ages 10 and up.
The talk will introduce two simple
tests to see if two words belong to the same category. Using these simple tests
can make complex sentences easy to understand. An explanation of the ugly
history of the English language will be presented, together with ways of sorting
out the grammatical problems that resulted from the difficult history of the
language.
